There’s a sacred stillness in a Great Blue Heron’s world — a patience that reminds us how life unfolds best when we let it.
The Nest captures that essence. A pair of herons tending to their young, quiet guardians in the reeds, embodying the devotion and resilience that define parenthood in the wild.
This was the first large-scale watercolor I painted for an adult audience — the piece that marked my shift from nursery themes to fine art storytelling. Every brushstroke was a meditation on balance: the soft diffusion of sky against the fine, deliberate lines of feathers; the intimate connection between two parents building a life together.
About the Heron:
The Great Blue Heron is North America’s largest heron and a symbol of tranquility and persistence. They thrive where water meets land — wetlands, marshes, and shores — yet these habitats are among the most threatened on Earth. Pollution, development, and climate change continue to erode their nesting grounds. Thanks to conservation efforts and wetland protections, herons are reclaiming parts of their range, standing once again as reminders that recovery is possible when nature is given space to breathe.
The Nest honors that fragile comeback — a testament to what can be saved when we choose to care.
Collectors often tell me they feel peace and purpose in this painting. Perhaps because it isn’t just an image of birds, but a story of resilience, renewal, and love — one that continues every time someone chooses to support art that gives back to conservation.
