There's a particular kind of stillness in a mother who's counting. She doesn't move much — just watches, ears forward, weight settled back on her haunches — while three pups press into her legs like she's the only solid thing in the world. I wanted to paint that exact moment: not the hunt, not the howl, just the quiet vigilance of a mother holding her family together.

Fewer than 20 red wolves remain in the wild today, making them the most endangered wolf species on Earth and the rarest large carnivore in the United States. They exist in exactly one wild population, in a small five-county stretch of eastern North Carolina — everywhere else they once ranged, from Texas to the Atlantic coast, they've simply vanished.

"What She Protects" is rendered in watercolor on paper. Available as a museum-quality paper print, gallery-wrapped canvas, or framed in your choice of four frame colors.

Conservation Corner

The red wolf (Canis rufus) is listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN and Endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act — it is the most endangered wolf species in the world. Once common throughout the southeastern and south-central United States, red wolves were driven to near-extinction by predator-control programs, habitat loss, and hybridization with coyotes. A reintroduction effort begun in 1987 at Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge once brought the wild population to over 130 individuals by 2006 — but mismanagement, illegal killing, and continued hybridization have since reduced that number to fewer than 20 wild wolves, all confined to a single population in eastern North Carolina. Roughly 250 more live in managed breeding facilities across the country.
